The LS50THa from Lunt Solar Systems is a 50mm H-alpha, unobstructed, pressure-tuned, dedicated Hydrogen-alpha telescope with a bandpass of <0.75 A.

The excitement of viewing our Star through a dedicated solar telescope is sure to provide many many hours of visual enjoyment and educational insights. Furthermore, this package is fully upgradeable at any time without ever having to go back to the factory.  Therefore, as the Sun becomes increasingly more active, you will appreciate that the instrument can grow right along with it.

The Lunt LS50THa Solar Telescope, complete with a Pressure Tuner,  provides the basic essentials perfect for a first time introduction to solar observing.  Also it including the newest technology for fine tuning, allowing basic research of the Sun’s disk and some surface details.

Doppler Tuning

True Doppler Tuning (Pressure Tuning) allows for a shift into and away from the user. Amazingly, this adds a 3D-like component to the viewing experience. Meanwhile it has minimal effect on proms due to their being at the edge of the disk, it does have an effect on filaments and active regions on the surface. Also, when looking at a filament at the center of the Sun, the user has the ability to Doppler shift from the base of the filament to the tip. Therefore, you’ll be able to follow the filament through it’s structure toward you and away from you.  All of this allows for enhanced visual and imaging capability for the observer as well as a research tool for the avid hobbyist. Most importantly, the pressure tuning system provides an order of magnitude more precision to the tuning of the desired features.

LS50THa Package Features:
  • A Narrow Band Hydrogen-alpha Dedicated System.
  • A refractor-based system with a 50 mm front objective.

Bought as an open box item several months ago in advance of the upcoming solar eclipse. The telescope saw first light with me on 8/6/17. has been in storage in provided case.

  2. R. Baldridge

LOVE the ‘scope. Bought the double-stack filter also and I am very, very happy with the image, contrast and quality / craftsmanship of the telescope. I’ve recommended this telescope to many friends and four have already purchased one!  R. Baldridge Public Programs Telescope Operator University of California / Lick Observatory

I love my Lunt telescope, one thing it will be nice from you is to give an option to change the stock focuser with an the good one so it will reduce the price. We have to keep the stock focuser maybe 50$ or 75$ and after we need to pay an other 250$ for a Feather Touch, so it will be really nice if we have a reduction for the stock focuser

  4. J. Holst

I purchased on Astromart, Beautiful instrument, Used it for the Eclipse, Shared the view with 200+ people in front of my office building., Purchased 100 glasses from you and gave them all away, wish I had purchased more., Need your help, only one o-ring on pressure tuner., How can I order new o-rings and grease? Also I am interested in purchasing more glasses for outreach, will you be discounting any leftovers from the eclipse?

  5. Michal Warzecha

Purchased the B600 option, single etalon. This is a great scope for the price. You can see surface features and prominences. A typical view will have the entire solar disc with a mid power eyepiece. Under winter, low Sun viewing, an Orion 6mm eyepiece worked well for some magnification.

The pressure tuning etalon works great. The Sun is 3Dish, and consistent. The helical focuser is adequate for visual use. I am able to get sharp views of the chromosphere details, and see prominences on the edge of the solar disc (they are small, but certainly visible). For photographic work, you may want to upgrade to the feathertouch focuser.

The telescope has a solid feel to it. The components are mostly machined metal (with some plastic). The parts fit together well. And I am happy it is made in the USA.

Now, there are limitations. With a 350mm focal length, you do not have high magnification of the features. But, what you do see is very sharp and spectacular. Considering the price point of this telescope compared to it’s larger variations, I am very satisfied with the views.

In summary, you get great hydrogen alpha views for a descent price. If you have the budget, you can certainly do better with larger aperture models having better resolution and magnification. But, for this prices you get a lot. This is great for portable use (it does not need a heavy mount), can be a supplemental scope if you are a casual hydrogen alpha observer, and is a way of enjoying hydrogen alpha without breaking the bank!

Finally Michigan cooperated to allow me a first successful light with the new Lunt 50. Took me some time with lots of sweat and foul language, but I got it focused! I’m used to the simplicity of my Dobsonian, naturally a learning curve was to be expected. Absolutely incredible! Well built American equipment. I’ll be back for that double stack. Well done Lunt team!

Quick tip: Not all eyepieces were created equal. If one isn’t allowing focus, try another. I had to switch from a 20mm to my 14mm (82°) ES. Huge difference! It’s a process, you’ll get it.
