The Sun is our Star!

.......and as you would expect, our Star is hot, bright, dynamic, and sometimes quite violent.

At 93 million miles away, we are ideally placed at a point where the Sun provides just enough warmth and energy essential to our living planet, Earth.

At only 93 million miles, the Sun is close enough for us to view its surface through a fairly inexpensive specialized scope from the comfort and relative safety (sunscreen, please) of our backyards on a clear and sunny day.

What! Astronomy during the day? Lunt Solar wants to show you how.

References

Prominences:
These look like eruptions from the edge of the Solar disk. Prominences can appear as small spiky-looking details, or large cloud-like detail with fine feather-like features. They are, in fact, ionized Hydrogen-alpha emissions being projected from the limb.

Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the Mesosphere, and extend outward into the Sun's Troposphere. They typically measure many earth diameters.

Filaments:
Filaments are string-like features on the surface of the Sun. At high resolution they take on a 3D effect due to the cooler aspect of the suspended filament contrasted against the bright, hotter Sun.

Filaments are actually prominences being viewed against the surface.

Spicules
A Spicule is a dynamic jet of gas about 500km long. They move outward at about 20km/second through the Chromosphere.

Father Angelo Secchi of the Vatican Observatory discovered them in 1877.

The Chromosphere is entirely composed of Spicules. These features can be seen as "fur" around the edge of the disk.

The Lunt LS60FHa is a 60mm aperture (no central obstruction) integrally tuned etalon for use on a customer supplied refractor.

The standard system includes the B600 blocking filter, which provides full disk images on telescopes up to 540mm focal length. Larger blocking filters suitable for longer focal length telescopes are also available options.

These Hydrogen-alpha Filters are designed to retrofit (adapters required) the customer supplied telescope for use during the day. They are easily removable so that the scope can continue to be used for night observing.

Several sizes can be matched to the existing scope aperture with the appropriate adapter. All LS60FHa systems include a front-mounted filter and a rear mounted 2″ or 1.25″ blocking diagonal.  Choose the blocking filter that best suits your telescope and your focuser size.

Because the LS60FHa has an estimated bandpass of <0.70 Angstroms it is capable of providing high contrast views of both surface and edge detail. Adding an additional etalon system (double-stacking) will reduce the bandpass to ~<0.50 (dependant upon scope) allowing for higher resolution viewing and/or imaging.  The part number LS60FHa is offered for this purpose or for those who already have a Lunt blocking filter.  A Lunt blocking filter must be used with Lunt Ha filters at all times.

  • Typically an adapter plate will be required to attach a Lunt Solar Filter to the front of a customer supplied telescope. These adapter are in stock for the more common user scopes, but can be custom made to your specific requirement.
  • No adapter is needed to connect one LS60FHa to another for double-stacking.
