The Sun is our Star!

.......and as you would expect, our Star is hot, bright, dynamic, and sometimes quite violent.

At 93 million miles away, we are ideally placed at a point where the Sun provides just enough warmth and energy essential to our living planet, Earth.
At only 93 million miles, the Sun is close enough for us to view it's surface thru a relatively inexpensive scope from the comfort and relative safety (Sunscreen please) of our backyards on a clear and warm day.

What! Astronomy during the day? Lunt Solar wants to show you how.

References

Prominences:
These look like eruptions from the edge of the Solar disk. Prominences can be small spikey looking details, or large cloud-like detail with fine feather-like features.

They are, in fact, ionized Hydrogen-alpha emissions being projected from the linb.

Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the Mesosphere, and extend outward into the Sun's Troposhere.
They typically measure many earth diameters.

Filaments:
These are strin-like features on the surface of the Sun.

At high resultion they take on a 3D effect due to the coller aspect of the suspended filament contrasted against the bright, hotter Sun.

They are actually prominences being viewed against the surface.

Spicules
A Spicule is a dynamic jet of gas about 500km long.
They move outward at about 20km/second thru the Chromosphere.

Father Angelo Secchi of the Vatican Observatory discovered them in 1877.

The Chromosphere is entirely composed of Spicules. These features can be seen as "fur"around the edge of the disk.

There's definately stuff to look at :)

Sunspot 1087 has been a rather active system of the last few days and its still going!  There is lots of detail to be see so get out there and check it out!

Here is an image from Stephen Yeathermon of Santa Fe, Texas.  Stephen captured this image with his LS60T-HaDS50 on July 16 using a Meade DSI III monochrome camera.  Nice shot!

About Lunt Solar Systems LLC…

Its a beautiful display of chaos, power, and energy at it’s finest when we view the sun.  Complex active regions, explosive prominences, and surging granulation is what today’s astronomers try to capture with their solar equipment.  The ability to capture this dance of beauty and chaos is an art, freezing a moment of time to share to the world.

One of these solar imagers is Eduard Garcia-Ribera from Balaguer, Spain.  Eduard has been an amateur astronomer since childhood, now 36, he has an array telescopes from large newtonians to his array of  solar filters!

(Eduard Garcia-Ribera with one of his telescopes.)

Eduard began solar imaging with a basic white light filter and small camera 15 years ago.  In 2004 he began to do more serious solar observing by purchasing a 60mm H-Alpha filter, since then he has upgraded to array of solar filters.  Currently his line up consists of a LS100THa, LS B600 Ca-K module on a 100ED refractor, and a Lunt 2″ Solar Wedge.  With these three filter systems Eduard has been able to produce an  impressive collection of solar images. Like the ones above, many of his images have been published and put on display.

Eduard’s main scope is his Ls100T which he describes as “a dream come true!”  He hopes to one day add an LS152T to further his solar capabilities.  He has come a long way since shooting his first solar image, producing some stunning solar images.  We hope to see many more amazing images from him in the future especially as the sun heads closer to maximum.

Lunt Solar Systems loves to see our scopes getting out and getting used!  So keep sending us your images, pictures, and event photos!

Well Arizona Solar Conference/ALCon 2010 has come and gone, we thank everyone who came out and joined us under the sun!  It was truly a great time and we hope to see you all again!

During the event we raffled off hats, shirts, and a brand new LS60THa/B600CPT with Sol Searcher and Zoom Eyepiece; this is one of our most popular scope packages!!  The lucky winner of this scope was Gil Bartee!  Congratulations Gil, we hope you enjoy it!

Here are some pictures from the event!
