The Sun is our Star!

I thought I would share my first attempt at Solar Imaging.. There’s definitely a lot to learn..
This was shot in single frame mode thru a LS60T tilt version on a CGEM.
It was late afternoon in Tucson, and the thermals were definitely effecting the images. It was interesting to watch the thermal bands cross the Sun. Frame after frame of soft image.. Then suddenly one very sharp image that could be saved. This issue makes focus difficult. I was never quite sure if it was focus or seeing..
The first lesson was that the files were being saved in 25% quality. So unfortunately some of the higher details were lost right of the bat.
The image was shot in B&W. I simply colorized in Photoshop using the RGB settings. Nothing else was done.
The plan is to get this setup and FTP the images in time-lapse to the web. I will probably stream the raw data so people can see that, and process the way they want. It would be interesting to see how other people go about that process and what results they get.
I’m going to be trying again today, and will share more results as I get them..

Despite a little heavy handling (Lets just say the box was a little crushed), the LS152T arrived safely in Japan.
The new owner was kind enough to forward a picture and a short e-mail….
…”In today’s late afternoon the sun suddenly appeared after a long absence. Of course, I observed the sun by LS152THa with great glee! I was satisfied with higher definition and contrast of both surface and edge details and its splendid performance. The pressure tuner also could operate effectively. If this week end is good weather, I wish to try imaging by using CCD camera.
Thank you for your great product! v(^_^)
Sincerely,
Toshihiko……”

Looking thru a telescope during the day? You can actually “see”…. Looks warm too :)
The Lunt 152T was delivered to the University of Hawaii several weeks ago. We have already received a few photographs taken by the University of Hawaii, but we were obviously thrilled to see that the scope is being put to very good use.
One of these days I’ll have to pop over ;) and see just how well this scope can perform at 10,000ft. I have heard that magnifications of 200X are being obtained.. Talk about being there!! I know, I know, there is a 9,000ft mountain just an hour from our facilities, but the viewing in Hawaii just has to be better.. doesn’t it??
If you have pictures of your Solar setup.. Send them along. We would especially like to see images taken at outreach and educational events…
